NGC 6791

A relatively sparse-looking cluster with an indistinct edge, several close star pairs and two prominent stars to the northwest.

Observation notes

During the observation, NGC 6791 appeared relatively open and sparse, with no pronounced central concentration. The visible stars were scattered across a fairly large area, and the cluster had no particularly distinct boundary against the surrounding rich star field. Visually, it seemed to merge gradually into the background.

Several close visual star pairs and small groups could be distinguished, giving the cluster a somewhat irregular structure. Two brighter stars to the northwest of the centre stood out in particular, drawing the overall impression in that direction and making the cluster appear slightly elongated.

About the object

Despite its relatively sparse appearance at the eyepiece, NGC 6791 is a very rich open cluster. Many member stars are faint, which probably explains why it appeared far less populated during visual observation.
